Understanding Dentures

Modern dental dentures feature a look and feel that make them almost indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Dental dentures are not only intended to beautify your teeth, but to also help in the restoration of your oral functions. Having dentures likewise provides support to your lips and cheeks to prevent your face from sagging. Other benefits include:

  • A natural-looking smile.
  • Quick treatment time.
  • Surgery isn't necessary.

Understanding Dental Implants

Implants are a long-term permanent replacement for missing teeth. Made from titanium, implants are surgically placed into your jawbone to serve as the root for prosthetic replacement. As time passes, they will fully integrate into your jaw and provide amazing facial support. Dental implants have their own sets of benefits for those who qualify for treatment, including:

  • A look, feel, and functionality similar to your natural teeth.
  • Jawbone stimulation to prevent shrinking.
  • Easy maintenance.
  • Dietary freedom.
  • The ability to last for decades.

Your Putnam dentist might recommend the use of implants if you need to replace a single tooth or several teeth that might not necessarily be adjacent. In case you need a whole arch replacement for your teeth, there’s also a full arch restoration option available.

dental implantThe American Academy of Implant Dentistry says that three million people in the United States have dental implants. Why are these artificial teeth so popular and successful? Dr. Stephen Solomon and Dr. Jonathan Solomon, your dentists in Putnam, CT, place dental implants to close smile gaps caused by oral injury, decay, abscess, gum disease, and more. Read about implants here and about how you could qualify for these state-of-the-art tooth replacements.

What exactly is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a completely artificial tooth. Its structure includes a titanium screw (root) placed into the jaw bone, a metal alloy abutment or extension post, and a custom-crafted porcelain crown. Because dental implants are located in solid bone, they actually stimulate its growth. This process is known as osseointegration, and it creates an incredibly solid foundation for the post and crown.

In addition, your dentist uses dental implants to support fixed, multi-tooth bridges and partial/full dentures. All of these implant-retained prosthetics reinforce jawbone size and density, avoiding the facial changes and oral function problems which accompany tooth loss.

The treatment in Putnam

It starts with a complete oral examination, including digital X-rays and a three-dimensional CAT scan. With this information, Dr. Solomon understands how much jaw bone you have and if it's sufficient for implant placement. If the bone is thin, there are augmentation treatments which can build it up.

With the establishment of a good foundation, the dentist opens the gums in the area of the empty tooth socket. Using a high-speed drill, he makes a small pilot hole in the bone and inserts the implant screw. A few sutures close the site, and you'll return home to heal.

Healing takes time, but the wait is worth it. Over many weeks, the jaw bone adheres to the titanium implant through something called osseointegration. Jawbone strength and size actually improve because of the implant.

When you return to Dr. Solomon's office, he'll re-open the implant site and bond on the abutment, or extension post, and a lifelike crown made of superior-quality porcelain. Then, you'll begin enjoying the benefits of this exceptional tooth replacement.

Take care of it

Your dental implant needs no special care. However, you must continue to brush and floss diligently to avoid plaque and tartar accumulation at the gum line. Also, see Dr. Solomon and his team for a hygienic cleaning and check-up every six months. Your hygienist may suggest special ways to keep your implant clean.

Finally, if you smoke or chew tobacco, consider starting a smoking cessation program through your primary care physician. Tobacco in all forms contains toxins which harm the gums and bone around dental implants. An infection known as peri-implantitis resembles advanced periodontal disease, and it could cause implant failure and necessitate removal.

Find out if your smile could benefit from what dental implants have to offer.

Whether you are missing one or several teeth it’s important that you seek the proper dental care you deserve so that you can get your dental implantssmile back on track. Luckily, our Putnam, CT dentists Dr. Stephen Solomon and Dr. Gerald Cohen are here to do just that. We offer an array of dental services to cater to all of your needs, and if you need to replace missing teeth then it’s time to learn more about dental implants.

What is a dental implant?

To make it as simple as possible a dental implant functions just like a natural tooth root. It’s even placed in the jawbone to take the place of your missing tooth’s roots.

Over time, the bone and surrounding tissue will grow around the implant and become one. This is known as osseointegration and it’s what makes a dental implant so effective. An implant can also be used to place one or several missing teeth.

Am I a good candidate for getting dental implants in Putnam, CT?

Anyone who is missing one or more teeth could benefit from getting dental implants. Of course, we will need to evaluate your oral health to make sure you are healthy enough for implants.

Good candidates will also be adults who are non-smokers or those planning to quit smoking prior to their procedure (smokers are more likely to experience implant failure than non-smokers). You should also not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant during your treatment process.

Besides being in good general health and maintaining good oral health, you should have a healthy immune system that isn’t compromised by chemotherapy, radiation, taking immunosuppressants, etc. The healthier you are the better and easier getting dental implants will be.

Dental implants have been giving countless patients back their healthy smiles and they could do the same for you. Turn to Stephen A. Solomon, DMD & Associates in Putnam, CT a consultation to see if implants are truly ideal for you. Don’t you want a healthy smile again?

Some patients think that dentures are the only choice that they have to replace missing teeth, but the ideal modern treatment is dental implants. Unlike dentures, implants give you a reliable and permanent tooth replacement solution. Not every patient who visits Dr. dental implantsSolomon’s Putnam, CT office will be an ideal candidate for dental implants, which is why it’s important to go in for a consultation as soon as possible. Learn more about implants and which patients make the best candidates for this popular restorative treatment.

Getting Dental Implants

A dental implant is a tiny screw-like device that your dentist installs into your gum line. Its ultimate purpose is to support a dental crown that will fill the space in your smile after a tooth is extracted (sometimes called the “extraction socket”). The process of getting dental implants starts with a basic consultation with your Putnam, CT dentist. But you must be a viable candidate for this procedure.

Who Is a Candidate for Implants?

In order to be a good candidate for dental implants you must have good dental health and enough strong bone tissue to support the device. If you’re going to get dental implants, you want them to successfully heal into your jaw bone and stay rooted for as long as possible. In some cases, a patient who has too little bone tissue for an implant may be eligible for bone grafting. Bone grafting is a dental procedure that helps support the existing tissue and promote the growth of new tissue so that it can successfully support an implant.

Getting Evaluated for Implants

Your dentist will take a detailed X-ray of your mouth and examine your gums to decide if you’re a viable candidate for this procedure. Your medical history will also be thoroughly reviewed, as patients with some uncontrolled conditions may have problems accepting the implant.

No Time Like the Present

If you have a missing tooth or a tooth that will be extracted, the sooner you visit your dentist to discuss whether you’re eligible for dental implants, the better. Call Stephen A. Solomon, DMD & Associates in Putnam, CT today at (860) 928-6533 to make an appointment.
